Is Rooftop Solar Worth It in Jodhpur?

An honest look at what rooftop solar actually costs and saves in Jodhpur—so you can decide with real numbers, not sales promises.

Jodhpur gets more sunshine than almost anywhere else in India. It also has electricity bills that have risen every year for the past decade, and a central government subsidy that lowers the upfront cost substantially. Taken together, those facts make rooftop solar genuinely attractive here — but that does not mean it is automatically worth it for your specific roof, usage pattern, and financial situation.

This post walks through an honest payback estimate so you can decide for yourself, rather than trusting the number a salesperson puts in front of you.

What "worth it" actually means

Before running numbers, be clear about what you are measuring.

If you are asking whether your system will generate free electricity — yes, for twenty-five years, assuming reasonable maintenance. If you are asking whether you will save more than you spend — almost certainly, for most Jodhpur homes, over a 10–15 year horizon. If you are asking whether the payback is fast enough to make sense given your circumstances — that depends on factors specific to your roof, your usage, and how you finance it.

Nobody can honestly answer the last question without a site survey.

The inputs that drive payback

Electricity cost

Jodhpur's electricity comes from JdVVNL (Jodhpur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited). Residential tariffs are tiered — you pay more per unit as your monthly consumption rises. Heavy users already in the upper tiers see the biggest savings, because every unit their solar system displaces is a unit they were paying the highest rate for.

Before doing any calculation, take your slab rate from your own latest JdVVNL bill rather than from a generic figure online. Tariffs are revised periodically, and using an out-of-date rate is the most common reason a payback estimate turns out wrong. Note the fixed and demand charges separately too — those continue whether or not you have solar.

Generation

A 3 kW system in Jodhpur, well-oriented and unshaded, would typically be expected to generate somewhere in the range of 330 to 420 units a month. The wide range is real — shading from a water tank, a parapet wall, or a neighbour's construction can cut output significantly. Your actual number depends on your roof's azimuth, any shading, how often the panels are cleaned, and seasonal variation between June and December.

A 5 kW system scales roughly proportionally: expect somewhere in the range of 550 to 700 units a month under similar conditions.

Dust soiling

Jodhpur sits at the edge of the Thar desert. Dust soiling is the dominant local cause of gradual output loss, and unlike panel degradation, it is fully reversible with cleaning. The subsidy

The PM Surya Ghar central subsidy is:

  • ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW
  • ₹18,000 for the third kW
  • Nothing beyond 3 kW

So 3 kW and above all receive the same maximum of ₹78,000. Check current terms at pmsuryaghar.gov.in — government schemes change and we do not control them.

Rajasthan has at times offered an additional state-level amount on top of the central subsidy. We are not quoting a figure here, because state schemes change and we would rather you check than trust a number on an installer’s blog — ask JdVVNL directly, or check the Rajasthan state energy department portal, before you count it into your budget.

The subsidy is not a discount on your invoice. You pay the full agreed amount to the installer, and the government transfers the subsidy to your bank account after installation and DISCOM inspection. Budget for the gross cost and treat the subsidy as a reimbursement that arrives weeks to months later.

A rough payback sketch

The calculation has three moving parts: how many units your system generates, what each unit saves you, and what the system cost after subsidy. Here is the arithmetic step by step — substitute your own numbers where indicated.

Step 1 — Monthly units offset

A 3 kW system in Jodhpur, well-oriented and unshaded, would typically generate 330 to 420 units a month. A 5 kW system scales proportionally: 550 to 700 units a month. For this worked example, use the midpoints: 375 units/month (3 kW) and 625 units/month (5 kW).

Step 2 — Annual saving

Multiply the monthly offset by 12, then by your effective per-unit tariff.

Your slab rate is printed on your latest bill and varies by consumption tier. For this worked example we assume ₹6 per unit — an illustrative figure, not a quoted tariff. Substitute your own rate, because it is the single input that moves the answer most.

3 kW worked example: 375 units/month × 12 months = 4,500 units/year 4,500 units × ₹6 = ₹27,000 saved per year

5 kW worked example: 625 units/month × 12 months = 7,500 units/year 7,500 units × ₹6 = ₹45,000 saved per year

Step 3 — Divide net cost by annual saving

3 kW: ₹1,02,000 ÷ ₹27,000 = 3.8 years 5 kW: ₹2,02,000 ÷ ₹45,000 = 4.5 years

What drives the range?

The effective tariff is the dominant variable — not the generation estimate and not the system price. If your slab rate is ₹5/unit, payback stretches to roughly 4.5 years (3 kW) or 5.4 years (5 kW). At ₹7/unit, it shortens to roughly 3.2 years (3 kW) or 3.8 years (5 kW). Across realistic assumptions, the range is approximately 3 to 6 years — which is substantially better than the 7–12-year figures that circulate on some comparison sites and reflect older, higher prices before the subsidy was expanded.

These estimates assume most generation is consumed directly during the day. If a large share is exported, net-metering credit arrives at the grid's lower export rate rather than the full import tariff, which will lengthen payback modestly. A home with heavy daytime AC use will sit at the short end; an evening-heavy household will sit at the long end.

The things that slow payback

Be honest with yourself about these before signing anything.

Shading. Even partial shading on a few cells for a few hours a day cuts total system output significantly, especially on string inverter systems. If your roof has a water tank, a staircase structure, or trees to the south, get an honest shading assessment — not a sales reassurance.

Evening-heavy load profiles. On-grid solar generates during the day and offsets your import at that time. If your household is out all day and your heavy consumption is in the evening, the offset is smaller. Net metering helps by giving you credit for daytime exports, but the export rate is lower than the import rate, so the credit does not fully substitute.

Financing. If you take a loan, the interest cost eats into your saving. A system that pays back in 4 years on cash might take 6 to 7 years when the EMI interest is included. That still may be a good decision depending on your situation — but model it honestly.

Grid outages. A standard on-grid system shuts down automatically when the grid goes down — this is a mandatory safety feature, not a fault. When solar is probably not the right call right now

  • Your roof is leased and the landlord has not agreed.
  • Your sanctioned load is very low and upgrading it costs more than it saves.
  • You are planning a significant renovation in the next three years.
  • Your roof gets significant shading from a structure you cannot remove.

None of these are permanent barriers, but they are worth resolving before signing an installation contract.

The honest bottom line

For most Jodhpur homeowners with a reasonably sized, south-facing, unshaded roof and a monthly bill above ₹2,000, rooftop solar is almost certainly worth doing — the irradiance here is exceptional and the subsidy lowers the entry cost considerably. For a home with a complicated roof or a low daytime load profile, the answer is "probably yes, but check the site first."
